  • Edge computing in IoT context: Horizontal and vertical linux container migration. Proceedings of global ioT summit, geneva, switzerland.
In recent years, the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) has largely been supported by the parallel development of the Cloud computing capacities. Cloud computing offered elastic and on-demand computing power able to host and support crucial IoT functions. However, the proliferation of connected objects poses the problem of the confidentiality of the data produced. This proliferation also threatens the performances of the supporting networks. To tackle those problems, the research community has recently turned to Fog Computing.

  • IoT and big data for africa: The waziup platform and use cases. Proceedings of the IST-Africa 2017 international conference. Windhoek, Namibia
IoT has not fully diffused in Africa to address various challenges faced by African people. To address the emergence and pervasiveness of IoT in Africa, we present an open IoT, and big data platform as an innovation platform to accelerate innovations in rural Africa. However, the technology is not dedicated to the rural cases; it is designed for any IoT application. The platform will allow to develop IoT applications coupled with Big Data capacities.

  • Low-cost IoT solutions for fish farmers in Africa. IST Africa 2018
Although fish farming in Africa is developing in the last decade, it still has a big potential of growth to meet the fish demand with growing population. One of the key parameters for a successful fish farm business is the water quality monitoring. Even though it is essential, it is often too expensive for African fish farmers to monitor their ponds. In the WAZIUP project, we deployed a low-cost and connected water monitoring system measuring pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature in a fish farm in Ghana.

  • IoT standards for Africa and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). IST Africa 2018
IoT is a major worldwide topic but can really be deployed if there are well-established standards. Today there are some important actions on standardisation, which are promoted either by ITU, which has a major impact in Africa or directly adopted in Africa by some operators. This article presents such important activities.

  • IOT, AN AFFORDABLE TECHNOLOGY TO EMPOWER AFRICANS ADRESSING NEEDS IN AFRICA
The opportunity for ICT intervention in Africa is huge especially for the so-called Internet of Things (IoT). The paper presents the EU-Africa H2020 WAZIUP project which focuses on IoT and related big data management for African applications. It takes cost of hardware and services as the main challenge to be addressed. The paper describes our proposed low-cost and open IoT gateway and platform for both robust and simple deployment and present real applications for Africa.

  • A Study of IoT Solution for Preventing Cattle rustling in African Context. 2nd International Conference on Internet of Things, Data and Cloud Computing (ICC'17).
Cattle Rustling is a recurrent phenomenon observed in many in African countries today. This scourge cause significant losses to farmers and governments. Confronted with this problem farmers have generally no solutions. Internet of Things can be a real solution to defeat this nuisance by first allowing theft detection and further prevent it with an accurate analysis on cattle’s behavior . Many solutions emerged these last years but they are generally design for European countries and these solutions do not fit the real constraints related to African rural context.

  • Building low-cost gateways and devices for open LoRa IoT test-beds". Proceedings of the 11th EAI International Conference on Testbeds and Research Infrastructures for the Development of Networks & Communities (TridentCom'2016)
While benefits of IoT are clearly stated the deployment of such devices in a large scale is still held back by technical challenges such as short communication distances. Recent long-range radio technologies such as Semtech’s LoRa are promising to deploy Low Power WAN at a very low-cost for a large variety of applications. The paper describes our proposed low-cost and open IoT gateway & devices for both robust and simple deployment.
